“The Self doesn’t rest. The Self seeks” – Yogi Bhajan
Is happiness what we are all ultimately all seeking?
The ego seeks happiness through identification with a false self. To the ego, happiness is a by-product of external phenomenon. Money, title, status possessions, sex, being loved, fitting in, reputation, food, alcohol, drugs, etc. But because these things are outside of us, they are not controlled by us and will ultimately ALWAYS bring us suffering.
The ego’s seeking brings us temporary happiness. The new car, the new relationship and the new job all provide the needed dopamine hit but shortly after, as the high begins to wear off, we are simply looking for the next thing. The ego itself is the addiction. It is the cause and the effect. The ego, by its very nature is programmed for attachment and hard wired for suffering. We were meant to outgrow our ego when we stopped being children and not make children our identities.
The Self seeks happiness as it is our birthright. There are Seven Steps to Happiness:
Step One: Commitment. In every life you are meant to commit. Commitment gives you character.
Step Two: Character. Character is when all your characteristic – all facets, flaws and behaviours are under your control. Character gives you dignity.
Step Three: Dignity. People start trusting you, liking you, respecting you. Dignity will give you divinity.
Step Four: Divinity: Divinity is when you have no duality about you. People trust you right away and have no fear about you. Divinity gives you grace.
Step Five: Where there is grace, there is no interference, no gap between two people, no hidden agenda. Grace gives you the power to sacrifice.
Step Six: The Power to Sacrifice. You can stand in any pain for any person. That sacrifice gives you happiness.
Step Seven: Happiness
Commit to a Higher Power, Clean House and Be in Selfless Service and you will see a world that you didn’t know existed.
With Love & Forgiveness,
The Way
