I have been on an intense journey of personal transformation over the past several years. At my starting point I was completely broken, lost, bewildered and desperate, but by Grace, I surrendered. I admitted I was powerless in improving my situation using my current way of thinking and was able to stay open and willing to try a different way. Today, not only has my own life been completely and miraculously transformed but I have worked with hundreds of others, guiding them in doing the same thing in their lives.
“No problem can be solved from the same consciousness that created it” – Albert Einstein
Recently, I have taken pause to reflect and to find a way to succinctly articulate what this process or “movement” is. I now understand that this new design for living or “movement”, that I have taken on, is to be “Selfish”. It all started with one Selfish act that continued to blossom with continual Selfish acts until I learned how to live Selfishly.
WTF?
The word selfish can create a strong negative reaction because being selfish, in one meaning of the word, is an undesirable, or even vile character trait. But I am speaking about being Selfish with a capital “S”. And the difference is no small thing. I feel like I am on a crusade now to teach the real meaning of the word Selfish and create a movement towards Selfish acts.
One Selfish Act – The Start
The “Self” is who you truly are. Your soul, the Atman, the Higher Self or the Authentic Self. Whatever word floats your boat – the nomenclature doesn’t matter. It might be easier for you to think of what the “Self” isn’t. It is not the mask or overlay of fear-based conditioning and programming that we call the ego. The mask that we use to hide or obscure the Self. The mask that we hide behind to face the world. The mask we use to fit in, to be accepted and ultimately loved. The ego is not Selfish because it obscures and hides the Self. The ego is self-indulgent and driven by fear. It is selfish with a small “s”.
To be Selfish is to consciously live a certain way. It is choosing who you want to be in this world and having the courage to live that out fearlessly. It is living by a code of ethics and way of Being. It is much easier to lie, steal, cheat and screw people over than to be Selfish in this way.
Kindness to everyone is a Selfish act. Compassion (passion for everyone) is a Selfish act. Rigorous honesty is a Selfish act. Being non-judgemental is a Selfish act. Forgiving is a Selfish act. Meditating in isolation is a Selfish act. Saying no to things that will lead to resentment is a Selfish act. Selfish acts bring us towards Wholeness and Divinity. And in doing so dissolve our ego along with our desire for self-indulgence.
When I am Selfish, I am not worried about fitting in, I am not worried what other people are going to think of me when I tell the truth, I am not afraid to love and be kind to everyone regardless of their beliefs and am no longer in conflict with anyone or anything. I choose who I want to be in this world, and I am at peace with myself and my fellows.
