If you have taken any kind of journey down a spiritual path, you will likely be familiar with the phrase “We are all One” or “Oneness”. It has a nice “love and light” and lets “kumbaya” with each other kind of vibe to it, which lends itself to also being a throw-away and spiritual bypassing statement if it is just being stated and not embodied. But once you begin to embody it, Oneness will completely change the way you related to the world and hence, will change the world
Ironically, even though the realization of Oneness as an objective Truth dates back well over 5000 years (The Vedas), it has more recently become the foundational cornerstone of our modern scientific understanding of the Universe. At least it is for those who choose not to bypass the behaviour of the quantum world because it contradicts their entrenched atheist-materialistic world view. And it is unfortunate that despite “mysticism” being confirmed and validated by “technology” over a period of 5000 years, we as a species, still don’t have the maturity and intellectual capacity to point ourselves to the Truth. "The Truth" that the universe is a singular individual system and that we are not separate objects in time space. It is unfortunate because this is the cause of all human suffering since the beginning of time and maybe even more so today. Why don’t we see it? Well as Bohm points out, “it’s because we are blinding ourselves to it” This begs the question why.
In Eastern traditions there is an image called “Indra’s Net” that portrays the interconnectedness of the universe. In Indra’s Net, the whole universe is represented by an infinitely repeating net of glittering jewels with a gem set at every knot on the net. Each gem in the net reflects the light reflected in all the other gems. Each of these gems in turn reflects the light from all the gems around them, and this process goes on forever into infinite space. Each gem holds and reflects the radiance of the whole universe and can be seen reflected in each of its parts. Each gem is analogous as an individual, localized spark of consciousness, which is simultaneously reflecting and being reflected by the whole Universe.
Back to the question of why are we blinding ourselves to Oneness? Our wisdom traditions, all of them, communicate messages in the forms of myth, stories, parables and allegories. This is not because they did not know how to communicate directly, it is because these concepts can’t be communicated directly as we lack the mental capacity to comprehend them. My 3-pound brain is not equipped to grasp the complexity and mystery of the universe. That is why it is often called “the great mystery”. It is not meant to be solved. It is meant to be experienced
Pride and Ignorance leads us down the path of believing we can intellectually understand, and hence measure, control and manipulate, our universe. Ironically it is those that reject the notion of God (creative universal intelligence the underwrites the unified field of consciousness) try to be God. In the attempt to measure, calculate and understand the universe they need to break it into separate pieces – most significantly they separate themselves from it too. That false idea of separation leads us into scarcity, fear, competition, war and suffering. It is one big mass psychosis.
What do we do about it? It is always an inside job. Oneness cannot be intellectually understood but it can be embodied. Meditate each day on the concept that you are interconnected with everything in one big field of energy, and that there is no separation between the observer and the observed – what you observe can’t exist without you observing it and your reason for being is to be an observer. Statements like “pray for your enemies”, “treat your neighbour as you would like to be treated”, “judge not lest you be judged”, “forgive them as they do not know what they are doing”, “turn the other cheek” will begin to make sense and you will aim to incorporate them in your daily life. This is what changes you and changes the world because you are the world – Uno.
